Who I am
Being a writer was one of the earliest careers I imagined for myself (and it lasted much longer than dreams of being a ballerina). While I have spent much of my working life writing for others or assessing other people’s work, it is only recently that I’ve gone solo.
In late 2019, I published my first book, an environmental history of the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria, based on my PhD thesis. This drew on my training in history and my decades of work in environmental planning. I am adept at editing all kinds of government and non-profit reports and articles.
I teach memoir writing, either one on one or in small groups doing an introductory five week course. Occasionally these are also run through the Tasmanian Writers Centre. I love working with beginner writers, it’s one of my favourite things in the world, besides flowers! I also assist anyone with shaping their fiction and non-fiction texts.
I have written fiction for many years but have only recently plucked up the courage to submit my work for publication. I have recently clocked up my first novel rejection. I didn’t disintegrate in shame as I always irrationally feared, so I’m on my way!
I am a full member of the Australian Society of Authors and member of the Tasmanian Writer’s Centre. I am currently co-coordinator for Nanowrimo in Tasmania, as a volunteer. For the uninitiated, that’s National Novel Writing Month in November.
